Sustainable Water and Wastewater Management in Urban Growth Centres Coping with Climate Change - Concepts for Lima Metropolitana (Perú)
The LiWa Project operates under the research programme “Research for Sustainable Development of the Megacities of Tomorrow – Energy- and climate-efficient structures in urban growth centres” (http://www.future-megacities.org) of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s (BMBF). It is one of the 10 Projects, which after the two-year preparatory phase (2005 – 2007), have been approved for the five-year main phase (2008-2013). The aim of the LiWa project consists on the development of concepts and procedures for the sustainable planning and management of water supply and sanitation in Lima, Peru’s capital city. Furthermore, scenarios for the future water supply will be created together with German and Peruvian Partners and subsequently effective, social-acceptable measures, that consider the climate change effects and the promotion of climate-efficient structures, will be developed. In addition, BMBF approved an extension until May 2014.
The Project comprises of 6 subprojects, in which ZIRIUS leads partial project 4 (Participatory Decision Making and Governance). Other involved project partners in Germany are: the Chair of Hydrology and Geohydrology (IWS) of the University of Stuttgart, the Institute for Landscape Planning and Ecology (ILPE) of the University of Stuttgart, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences. The project’s general coordinator is ifak e.V. Magdeburg. Besides partial project 4, ZIRIUS is responsible for the local coordination of the project.
